AP) Elton John said forming a civil partnership with his
longtime lover David Furnish in England this week will be "the
happiest day of my life."
But, the pop star added, he will feel sorry for the many gay couples who live in countries that prohibit such unions. "It has been a long struggle for equal rights to gay people in Britain, but now, in the 21st century, we have real civil rights, tolerance and final acceptance in our lives," John wrote in The Observer, a Sunday newspaper. "Next Wednesday, on the happiest day of my life, when I celebrate a civil partnership with David, I will be thinking, however, about those less fortunate than we are. In many countries, having a same-sex partner is still outlawed." Quoting Amnesty International, John said an estimated 80 countries still have laws that criminalize adult same-sex relations. He also cited specific cases of abuse in countries such as the United Arab Emirates, Jamaica, Uganda, Iraq and Poland. "Throughout history, gay people such as myself and David have often been made scapegoats by those who fear that we are a threat to the status quo," John said. More than 600 same-sex couples plan to form civil partnerships in England and Wales on Wednesday, the first day that such ceremonies become possible. In order to get the law passed that allow such unions, the British government avoided potential opposition by avoiding the term "marriage." |

Interesting article from www.eltonfan.net The Musical King With productions of "The Lion King" and "Aida" running around the world — and with "Billy Elliot," a smash hit in London — Elton John has become the most successful composer working in the theater, says Michael Riedel of the New York Post. Not since Andrew Lloyd Webber colonized
the globe with "Cats" and "The Phantom of the Opera"
in the '80s has a theatrical songwriter reached as many audiences, or made
as much money, as Elton has now. "If he can't find the song quickly, you have to send him a new
lyric," says Tom Schumacher, the current head of Disney
Theatrical. Elton writes a melody, records the song on a CD and ships it
off to the producers. He leaves structure of the song, its musical
setting and its orchestrations to others. "He gives you his
version, and then you adapt it for your purposes," says Schumacher.
It doesn't matter to him where or how the song is used, but he is
concerned about the sound. |

An "ecstatic" Elton John joined a host of celebrities for the opening night of the fleet-footed musical "Billy Elliot." The pop singer wrote the music for the show, based on the hit British film about a miner's son with a passion for dance. Both the film and the musical were directed by Stephen Daldry. "I'm so proud to have been a part of it," John said. London's critics were equally enthusiastic

Elton John bad mouths Madonna accusing her of being lip-sync
queen
LONDON (AFP) - Elton John launched a scathing
verbal attack on Madonna during an award ceremony in which he accused her
of cheating her fans by lip-synching on stage .
Attending the Q Awards in central London late Monday to collect a prize for
his songwriting, Elton, 56, was incensed to find the Queen of Pop had been
nominated for best live act.
Taking to the stage, Sir Elton blasted: "Madonna - best f------ live act?
F--- off.
"Since when has lip-synching been live?" he asked. "Anyone who
lip-synchs in public on stage when you pay 75 pounds (134 dollars, 109 euros) to
see them should be shot."
He ended his rant by saying: "That's me off her f------ Christmas card
list but do I give a toss? No."
Madonna, nominated for her Reinvention tour, did not clinch the award -- that
honour went to British band Muse.
Monday's outburst at the Grosvenor House Hotel came after another in Taiwan
last month, when John branded Taiwanese photographers "rude, vile pigs"
in an airport bust-up.
Madonna's US spokeswoman Liz Rosenberg flatly rejected John's accusations,
saying in a statement: "Madonna does not lip-synch nor does she spend her
time trashing other artists.
"She sang every note of her Reinvention tour live and is not ashamed
that she was well paid for her hard work."
And the 46-year-old star showed she was not taking Sir Elton's remarks too
seriously. "Elton John remains on her Christmas card list whether he is
nice... or naughty," the statement added.
Madonna's Reinvention tour, replete with pumping dance routines and yoga
displays, came to Britain in August. It has attracted criticism for its pricey
tickets -- seats cost a minimum of 75 pounds, going up to 160 pounds for prime
spots.

But before the concert...something bad happened !! from ThisisLondon.com Sir Elton John branded photographers in Taiwan
"rude, vile pigs" today in a furious airport bust-up.
The star arrived in the country to play a concert, the last date in his tour
of the Far East. Taiwanese news channel ETTV showed Sir Elton, dressed in a royal blue
tracksuit and matching sunglasses, clenching his teeth and muttering expletives
as he stood with his arms crossed tightly across his chest.
"Rude, vile pigs!" he shouted. "Do you know what that means?
Rude, vile pigs. That's what all of you are."
One of the photographers shouted back: "Why don't you get out of
Taiwan?"
Sir Elton replied: "We'd love to get out of Taiwan if it's full of
people like you. Pig! Pig!"
The star, who recently performed in Shanghai and Hong Kong, said: "We
had a great tour of the Far East and then we come to Taiwan."
It is not the first time the 57-year-old singer has lost his temper in
public.
In the fly-on-the-wall documentary Tantrums And Tiaras, made by his partner
David Furnish, he famously threw a fit when a female fan waved at him and He stormed off court saying: "I'm never coming back to the south of
France again."
A spokeswoman for Sir Elton accused police and airport security officials of
failing to protect the star but said he was "bravely" carrying on with
tonight's concert at the Chung Shan soccer stadium.
"Elton John's arrival at Taipei Airport was greeted by what can only be
described as chaos and confusion," the spokeswoman said.
"No sooner had he disembarked from the aircraft, he was led into the
public immigration area of the airport which was immediately besieged by hordes
of photographers and live TV crews intent upon disrupting his progress.
"The local police and security at the airport failed to protect Elton
John from the ensuing chaos.
"Despite this frightening arrival, his spirits remain high and he is
looking forward to performing the concert."

Pop veteran SIR ELTON JOHN has donated $18,000 (GBP10,000) to an appeal
aimed at alleviating the pain of families involved in the recent Russian hostage
crisis.
The generous YOUR SONG star and his partner DAVID FURNISH were horrified by the tragic school siege in Beslan last week (ends03SEP04), in which 335 people - many of them children - lost their lives at the hands of Chechen terrorists. And John admits the tragedy left them so devastated, they immediately leapt into action to help the victims' families in the aftermath of the killing spree. He says, "This is the most devastating and upsetting thing we have seen in all our lives. We are very pleased to help in any way."

From Billboard.com
ELTON TOPS BILLBOARD CHART 'READY' FOR A FIRST: It's hard to believe there is any unconquered
chart territory for Elton John, who made his debut on The Billboard Hot 100 in
August 1970 with "Border Song." Still, the new year of 2004 brings a
new accomplishment for Elton, who collects his first No. 1 hit on another
Billboard chart.
Another of the three tracks, "Are You Ready for Love," was released in
the U.K. in 2003, and topped the British singles chart. Now issued in the U.S.
on Southern Fried/Ultra, "Are You Ready for Love" moves 2-1 on the Hot
Dance/Club Play chart this week. Since this chart was introduced in 1976, Elton
has never topped the tally until now. "Are You Ready for Love" is Elton's biggest Club Play hit since April 1994, when a remake of "Don't Go Breaking My Heart," with RuPaul taking Kiki Dee's place as Elton's duet partner, peaked at No. 3 |
