from CBS

AP) Elton John said forming a civil partnership with his longtime lover David Furnish in England this week will be "the happiest day of my life."

But, the pop star added, he will feel sorry for the many gay couples who live in countries that prohibit such unions.

"It has been a long struggle for equal rights to gay people in Britain, but now, in the 21st century, we have real civil rights, tolerance and final acceptance in our lives," John wrote in The Observer, a Sunday newspaper.

"Next Wednesday, on the happiest day of my life, when I celebrate a civil partnership with David, I will be thinking, however, about those less fortunate than we are. In many countries, having a same-sex partner is still outlawed."

Quoting Amnesty International, John said an estimated 80 countries still have laws that criminalize adult same-sex relations. He also cited specific cases of abuse in countries such as the United Arab Emirates, Jamaica, Uganda, Iraq and Poland.

"Throughout history, gay people such as myself and David have often been made scapegoats by those who fear that we are a threat to the status quo," John said.

More than 600 same-sex couples plan to form civil partnerships in England and Wales on Wednesday, the first day that such ceremonies become possible. In order to get the law passed that allow such unions, the British government avoided potential opposition by avoiding the term "marriage."

Elton John's "Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy" celebrates its 30th anniversary with an expanded deluxe edition release and commmorative September 2005 concert dates.

"Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy", one of the greatest albums in pop history, was the first album to debut on the Billboard album charts at #1 and in fact debuted at #1 on all three recognized charts of the era (Billboard, Cash Box and Record World).

The certified triple platinum album was the pinnacle of Elton John's career at the time and covered, in an autobiographical fashion, the first almost 30 years of the lives of Elton and lyricist Bernie Taupin. It was their first genuine concept album, Bernie wrote the lyrics chronologically according to the events in their lives, Elton then wrote the music to the songs in the same order and producer Gus Dudgeon recorded them chronologically as well.

The album's biggest chart hit, the gold, #4 pop "Someone Saved My Life Tonight," is still considered one of the most emotionally charged songs Elton and Bernie have ever penned. Now the album itself celebrates its 30th anniversary.

Elton will commemorate the event not only with the release of the expanded, two-CD "Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy" - Deluxe Edition (Island/UMe) on September 13, 2005, but also by performing a series of historic sold-out concerts on September 16 and 17 at TD Banknorth Garden, Boston and September 21, 23 and 24 at Madison Square Garden, New York where included in the repertoire he will perform the album in its entirety for the first time in over 30 years.

Disc One of "Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy" - Deluxe Edition includes the original full length recording of "Captain Fantastic" and adds bonus tracks originally issued as singles-only in 1974 and early 1975. Included is the John Lennon duet of "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" and Elton's rendition of the Lennon-written "One Day At A Time." The Deluxe Edition also contains "Philadelphia Freedom" and "House Of Cards" (the b-side to "Someone Saved My Life Tonight," making its debut on this Captain Fantastic reissue). "Philadelphia Freedom" and "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" each peaked at #1 pop, both earning gold certification.

Disc Two of the Deluxe Edition will include, for the first time ever, the Wembley Stadium concert performance when on June 21, 1975 Elton boldly debuted the freshly released "Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy" album in its entirety to just short of 120,000 people. In fact, it is the one and only time prior to this year's commemorative concerts that the album was played live in its entirety. Also heard on the Deluxe Edition are "Pinball Wizard" and "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting" which served as the Wembley Stadium encores. Elton's support acts on the memorable day included The Beach Boys, The Eagles, Rufus with Chaka Khan, Joe Walsh, and Stackridge.

Thirty years on, Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy - Deluxe Edition offers another listen to the album Taupin says, in the liner notes to the 1990 Elton box set to be continued..., "(is) probably the finest album we've made."

Elton comments in an introduction that he has written specifically for the Deluxe Edition, "It is ironic since we recorded this album that our lives have become the title. Bernie has become The Brown Dirt Cowboy living on a ranch in California raising Cutting horses and prize winning bulls and I have become Captain Fantastic travelling from the edge of the world to your town collecting photography and art and living a life beyond my wildest dreams."

Interesting article from www.eltonfan.net

The Musical King

With productions of "The Lion King" and "Aida" running around the world ó and with "Billy Elliot," a smash hit in London ó Elton John has become the most successful composer working in the theater, says Michael Riedel of the New York Post.

Not since Andrew Lloyd Webber colonized the globe with "Cats" and "The Phantom of the Opera" in the '80s has a theatrical songwriter reached as many audiences, or made as much money, as Elton has now.

In addition to the $1 million he's usually paid upfront, industry sources estimate his weekly royalties exceed $100,000. What makes his success all the more interesting is the way Elton has achieved it.

He is not, by any stretch of the imagination, a traditional Broadway composer. You won't find him at auditions or rehearsals or holed up in a hotel room out of town, banging out a new song for the second act. He didn't see "The Lion King" until its opening night in New York. He attended some performances of "Aida" during its out-of-town tryout in Atlanta, but that's only because he lives there. The first time he saw "Billy Elliot" was at a critics' preview.

Elton, it seems, can write a hit show without ever setting foot in the theater. He is Broadway's first virtual composer. "Elton understands the process of writing a musical," says Peter Schneider, the former head of Disney Theatrical, which produced "The Lion King" and "Aida." "But is he in the room like Rodgers and Hammerstein or Stephen Schwartz? No. He's not them."

A theater source who has worked on Elton's shows says bluntly: "He's never around." It is, in fact, financially impossible for Elton to be around a musical in development. He gives hundreds of concerts worldwide each year, earning tens of millions of dollars. If he were to stop performing for several months to be in the trenches with a new show, the loss of income would be substantial.

"He's working pretty much every day," says another person involved with his Broadway shows. "He makes a lot of money, but he spends a lot, too." Having him around would also cost producers a lot of money.

Elton travels with a phalanx of assistants and security guards, and because he doesn't like to sleep in hotel rooms, he usually insists, if he's in the United States, on being flown home to Atlanta in time for bed.

"You wouldn't have enough money in your production budget to pay for Elton to be around," a Disney source says. Because he might be performing anywhere in the world at any given moment, Elton writes his musicals by fax, e-mail, even cellphone.

During the three-month tryout of "Billy Elliot," director Stephen Daldry would sometimes hold up his cellphone in the wings so Elton could hear the dialogue that set up the song he was writing. Elton always writes from lyrics ó they clue him into the song's emotional and narrative purpose ó and he writes fast. It takes him about 20 minutes to knock out a tune.

"If he can't find the song quickly, you have to send him a new lyric," says Tom Schumacher, the current head of Disney Theatrical. Elton writes a melody, records the song on a CD and ships it off to the producers. He leaves structure of the song, its musical setting and its orchestrations to others. "He gives you his version, and then you adapt it for your purposes," says Schumacher. It doesn't matter to him where or how the song is used, but he is concerned about the sound.

The first time he saw "Aida" in New York, he stormed out of the theater because he didn't like the way one of his songs had been set. For the most part, though, he is a flexible, if absent, collaborator. The quality of the work varies.

Critics have complained that his theater songs for the Disney shows are generic pop-rock ballads and anthems. But many theater people think Elton has made a creative leap forward with "Billy Elliot," creating songs that are specific to the characters and dramatic moments.

Charles Spencer, the influential theater critic for the Daily Telegraph, wrote: "Elton John has written a wonderful score that ranges from folk to hard rock, from razzle-dazzle show tunes to soaring anthems of human solidarity and defiance." That notice was just about the best Elton has received yet for his work for the stage.

Broadway's first virtual composer, it seems, may also be turning into one of its best.

Elton John bad mouths Madonna accusing her of being lip-sync queen

LONDON (AFP) - Elton John launched a scathing verbal attack on Madonna  during an award ceremony in which he accused her of cheating her fans by lip-synching on stage .

Attending the Q Awards in central London late Monday to collect a prize for his songwriting, Elton, 56, was incensed to find the Queen of Pop had been nominated for best live act.

Taking to the stage, Sir Elton blasted: "Madonna - best f------ live act? F--- off.

"Since when has lip-synching been live?" he asked. "Anyone who lip-synchs in public on stage when you pay 75 pounds (134 dollars, 109 euros) to see them should be shot."

He ended his rant by saying: "That's me off her f------ Christmas card list but do I give a toss? No."

Madonna, nominated for her Reinvention tour, did not clinch the award -- that honour went to British band Muse.

Monday's outburst at the Grosvenor House Hotel came after another in Taiwan last month, when John branded Taiwanese photographers "rude, vile pigs" in an airport bust-up.

Madonna's US spokeswoman Liz Rosenberg flatly rejected John's accusations, saying in a statement: "Madonna does not lip-synch nor does she spend her time trashing other artists.

"She sang every note of her Reinvention tour live and is not ashamed that she was well paid for her hard work."

And the 46-year-old star showed she was not taking Sir Elton's remarks too seriously. "Elton John remains on her Christmas card list whether he is nice... or naughty," the statement added.

Madonna's Reinvention tour, replete with pumping dance routines and yoga displays, came to Britain in August. It has attracted criticism for its pricey tickets -- seats cost a minimum of 75 pounds, going up to 160 pounds for prime spots.

First Tv Appearances for "All that I'm allowed"

This evening Elton performed "All that I'm allowed" on Italian Tv - The show was recorded last wednesday -

September 23th  2004

But before the concert...something bad happened !!

from ThisisLondon.com

Sir Elton John branded photographers in Taiwan "rude, vile pigs" today in a furious airport bust-up.

The star arrived in the country to play a concert, the last date in his tour of the Far East.
But after touching down at Taipei's Chiang Kai-Shek airport by private jet in the early hours of this morning, he was besieged by photographers and TV crews.

Taiwanese news channel ETTV showed Sir Elton, dressed in a royal blue tracksuit and matching sunglasses, clenching his teeth and muttering expletives as he stood with his arms crossed tightly across his chest.

"Rude, vile pigs!" he shouted. "Do you know what that means? Rude, vile pigs. That's what all of you are."

One of the photographers shouted back: "Why don't you get out of Taiwan?"

Sir Elton replied: "We'd love to get out of Taiwan if it's full of people like you. Pig! Pig!"

The star, who recently performed in Shanghai and Hong Kong, said: "We had a great tour of the Far East and then we come to Taiwan."

It is not the first time the 57-year-old singer has lost his temper in public.

In the fly-on-the-wall documentary Tantrums And Tiaras, made by his partner David Furnish, he famously threw a fit when a female fan waved at him and
shouted "Yoo hoo!" on the tennis court of his French Riviera hotel.

He stormed off court saying: "I'm never coming back to the south of France again."

A spokeswoman for Sir Elton accused police and airport security officials of failing to protect the star but said he was "bravely" carrying on with tonight's concert at the Chung Shan soccer stadium.

"Elton John's arrival at Taipei Airport was greeted by what can only be described as chaos and confusion," the spokeswoman said.

"No sooner had he disembarked from the aircraft, he was led into the public immigration area of the airport which was immediately besieged by hordes of photographers and live TV crews intent upon disrupting his progress.

"The local police and security at the airport failed to protect Elton John from the ensuing chaos.

"Despite this frightening arrival, his spirits remain high and he is looking forward to performing the concert."

Elton beats Barbara

Until this week, two artists were tied with the highest number of entries on the Adult Contemporary chart. Barbra Streisand and Elton John each had 63, but one of them has broken away to take first place.

Elton's "Answer in the Sky" is his 64th entry on the AC chart. The songs have charted during a period of 34 years, counting back to the debut of "Your Song" in 1970.

The meter on Streisand's hits started running in 1964, with the debut of "People." She was last on the AC survey in January 2002 with holiday song "It Must Have Been the Mistletoe."

If "Answer" can find its way to the Adult Top 40 chart, it will be Elton's eighth entry. The male artist with the most entries on this tally is Lenny Kravitz. His 10th song to appear on this chart debuts this week: "Lady" (Virgin) is new at No. 33.

Pop veteran SIR ELTON JOHN has donated $18,000 (GBP10,000) to an appeal aimed at alleviating the pain of families involved in the recent Russian hostage crisis.

The generous YOUR SONG star and his partner DAVID FURNISH were horrified by the tragic school siege in Beslan last week (ends03SEP04), in which 335 people - many of them children - lost their lives at the hands of Chechen terrorists.

And John admits the tragedy left them so devastated, they immediately leapt into action to help the victims' families in the aftermath of the killing spree.

He says, "This is the most devastating and upsetting thing we have seen in all our lives. We are very pleased to help in any way."

'READY' FOR A FIRST: It's hard to believe there is any unconquered chart territory for Elton John, who made his debut on The Billboard Hot 100 in August 1970 with "Border Song." Still, the new year of 2004 brings a new accomplishment for Elton, who collects his first No. 1 hit on another Billboard chart.
Back in 1977, Elton went into the studio with American producer Thom Bell to record three songs. One of those cuts, "Mama Can't Buy You Love," peaked at No. 9 in 1979.

Another of the three tracks, "Are You Ready for Love," was released in the U.K. in 2003, and topped the British singles chart. Now issued in the U.S. on Southern Fried/Ultra, "Are You Ready for Love" moves 2-1 on the Hot Dance/Club Play chart this week. Since this chart was introduced in 1976, Elton has never topped the tally until now.

"Are You Ready for Love" is Elton's biggest Club Play hit since April 1994, when a remake of "Don't Go Breaking My Heart," with RuPaul taking Kiki Dee's place as Elton's duet partner, peaked at No. 3
